Introduction
HBLT-wire is a capacitive sensor for level measurement of NH3 refrigerant in industrial refrigeration systems. The sensor has an output signal of 4-20 mA, which is proportional with 0 and 100%.Its output signal is 4 mA for an empty container and 20 mA for a full container.HBLT-wire can be adjusted in length to the current application. The sensor element consists of a 2mm steel wire as well as a Teflon tube. Both parts are provided with a length of 4 m and can be shortened with diagonal cutters or other pliers.HBLT-wire can be used in connection with the HBLT-C1 controller for controlling pumps.
Technical details
- Flexible sensor wire, which is adjustable to a length of 600 to 4000 mm.
- Sturdy and reliable design with a standard 4-20 mA output signal.
- Designed for the refrigeration industry – max. pressure up to 100 bar.
- Split design which makes the sensor easy to install and service. The electronic part can easily be separated from the mechanical part by loosening the threaded union.
- Simple calibration for the specified length.
- Alarm output can be set in a range from 10% to 100%.
- Compact design that minimises shipment costs.
- Can be used for marine applications, since measurement is not affected by contact with the metal surface of the overflow pipe.
- Measures NH3 & HFC refrigerants (R22, R134A, R404A, R410A, R507, R717 & R718).

Connection diagram

The sensor can be programmed to either emit a linear signal, which is identical to the tank level, or to regulate a valve for the purpose of obtaining the same level in the tank (float valve).

Applications

When using a level sensor for measuring Ammonia in a compact plate and shell heat exchanger or other systems with turbulent conditions, we have new recommendation based on recent experience:
For Stand-pipes with stable conditions (smooth changes in the level):
- Use a HBLT-Wire or a HBLT-A1 rod-style sensor. For Stand-pipes with turbulent conditions
(a lot of turbulence, cooking, foaming, liquid from the top): - Use a HBLT-A1 rod-style sensor, or
- Use only a HBLT-Wire sensor when you have it mounted in an inner guide-tube of e.g. DN25 as
illustrated.
The guide-tube will dampen the turbulence and the foaming and you will have a good
measurement. - If HBLT-Wire sensor is already mounted under these conditions WITHOUT a guide-tube,
do eventually set the filter time function between 60-120 seconds to dampen the signal from the
turbulent conditions. For tank/drum installation: - Use a HBLT-A1 rod-style sensor, or
- Use only a HBLT-Wire sensor when you have it mounted in an inner guide-tube of e.g. DN25
as illustrated. The guide-tube will dampen the level and the foaming and you will have a good
measurement. - If HBLT-Wire sensor is already mounted under these conditions WITHOUT a guide-tube,
do eventually set the filter time function between 60-120 seconds to dampen the signal from
the turbulent conditions.
For Alpha Laval U-turn evaporator:
- Use a HBLT-A1 rod-style sensor.
